Gavaskar Suggests Key Changes to India's Lineup for Second Test Against England
Following India's recent defeat to England, cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has urged the team management to consider strategic changes to the playing XI for the crucial second Test in Birmingham. Gavaskar specifically highlighted the inclusion of Kuldeep Yadav as a potential game-changer, advocating for his inclusion in place of Shardul Thakur.
Gavaskar believes the conditions at Edgbaston will favor wrist spin, making Kuldeep a valuable asset. "Whether Jasprit Bumrah is fit or not, I think Kuldeep Yadav has to come into the team... because the Birmingham pitch will be one where there will be just a little bit of help for the wrist spinner," Gavaskar stated during a recent broadcast.
Thakur, who was making his first Test appearance in over two years, had a minimal impact on the game. His performance with both bat and ball was deemed insufficient by Gavaskar, despite a brief moment of brilliance where he dismissed Ben Stokes and Harry Brook in quick succession.
Despite Kuldeep's previous underwhelming performance in England, where he went wicketless at Lord's in 2018, Gavaskar emphasized the importance of his variety and potential impact in Birmingham.
Gavaskar also addressed concerns surrounding the middle order, acknowledging the struggles of debutant Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair, who were both dismissed for ducks in the first innings at Headingley. While advocating for patience, Gavaskar hinted at potential changes if India suffers another defeat.
"If things don't go well in the second Test, maybe Sai (Sudharsan) and Karun (Nair)... Then I'd also look at Washington (Sundar), so that it really gives you a more solid batting, and also get a little more variety as far the bowling is concerned," he added.
Following their loss at Headingley, the Indian team is eager to level the series against England at Edgbaston.
