Rohit Sharma Recalls Heart-Stopping Moment of Suryakumar Yadav's Game-Changing Catch
Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma has reflected on the nail-biting moments of their T20 World Cup victory against South Africa in Barbados last year, pinpointing Suryakumar Yadav's stunning catch as the turning point of the final match.
Speaking to JioHotstar, Rohit Sharma recounted the suspense surrounding Yadav's crucial grab. "Surya was positioned at long-off, and that catch—honestly, it was the defining moment. Even after he secured it, the umpires meticulously checked if he had touched the boundary rope. Everyone's heart was in their mouth. I was at long-on, witnessing the play unfold. It initially appeared to be a six—until Surya soared in and executed that blinder. The wind conditions, blowing inward, I believe, subtly aided in pulling the ball back."
He further elaborated, "I was standing beside him during the review. I inquired, and he responded, 'I believe I've caught it.' The zoom camera confirmed that the rope remained still—a telltale sign of no contact. That provided us with some reassurance. However, uncertainty lingered until the confirmation flashed on the big screen, as the third umpire's decision remained pending."
The victory marked a significant milestone for coach Rahul Dravid, who had contemplated stepping down after the 2023 ODI World Cup.
"Rahul bhai considered resigning after the 2023 World Cup. However, we persuaded him, 'There's another World Cup in six months. We've come this far. Let's give it one more shot.' He concurred, and I'm immensely grateful he did. I'm confident he now acknowledges that he made the right choice," Rohit stated.
The captain also conveyed his personal feelings regarding the triumph. "For me, it was deeply emotional. My journey as a cricketer commenced with this format in the 2007 T20 World Cup. To complete the circle and reclaim the trophy in 2024 was truly extraordinary."
Sharma also shed light on the team's tactical strategy during their semi-final victory against England in Guyana. "Leading up to this semi-final, I felt quietly confident. We had been playing exceptional cricket, and everyone was in excellent form, executing our team objectives precisely. Naturally, the memory of our 2022 defeat against England lingered—as it should."
"It was a crushing defeat. However, we learned valuable lessons. Between 2022 and 2024, we implemented significant changes: in our mindset, our preparation, and our approach to crucial moments. This time, we were thoroughly prepared. There was unwavering belief and clarity in our objectives."
The captain emphasized the critical role of securing early wickets during the powerplay overs. "Securing wickets in the powerplay is paramount, as it accomplishes half the task. Against England, it held particular significance. Both Buttler and Salt pose a threat, but Buttler is their linchpin. He's seasoned, plays globally, and possesses extensive knowledge of our bowlers and how to play Axar, Kuldeep, and Bumrah. Therefore, dismissing him early was vital."
"We claimed his wicket in the third over and Salt's in the subsequent one. At that point, we recognized that we were halfway to victory. Subsequently, the game's tempo slowed. We introduced the spinners—Kuldeep, Axar, and Jaddu—who bowled with exceptional skill. The pitch favored spin, and the intention was to introduce the slower bowlers as early as feasible," Rohit concluded.
